IMAGINE Adaptation is attending the ICTA-UAB Growth vs Climate Conference 2024 in Barcelona. The conference will gather leading scientists, thinkers, policymakers, activists and journalists to discuss the most pressing environmental issues of our time.

Human activity is irreversibly changing our planet, especially our climate. The voracious demand for fossil fuels and natural resources has led us to an ecological breaking point, even after decades of climate action.

It’s time to rethink how we manage our oceans, forests, cities, consumption patterns and economic systems. And the science is here for it.

Participants will discuss perspectives on growth in the fight against climate change, as a path for reversing the climate trend. How do we reverse this trend? Will green growth, the bioeconomy, or the Green New Deal be enough to avert a climate disaster? Or should we look to degrowth or a-growth as alternative models? What are the tradeoffs associated with different mitigation strategies and how can we avoid rebound effects and negative social impacts?

The 3-day event will feature keynote speakers, academic papers on specific and cross-cutting themes policy debates, and co-creation workshops organized across five societal challenges: Oceans, Land, Cities, Consumption and Policy.

The IMAGINE adaptation team will give talks on the following topics:

  • 9:00-10:30, March 14th, CITIES Panel 2, What are urban adaptation imaginaries and how can they be applied in research and practice? – William Lewis
  • 14:00-15:30, March 14th, CITIES Panel 8, Defining success in climate change adaptation: insights from leading experts and implications for urban adaptation research and practice – Ana Terra Amorim-Maia
  • 14:00-15:30, March 15th, CROSS CUTTING THEME Panel 21, Governing intersectional climate justice: Tactics and lessons from Barcelona – Ana Terra Amorim-Maia

Participants will draw their vision of urban adaptation in a creative exercise used to enable a discussion on current adaptation action.
